Dog Training
Training Methods
My training approach is science-based, dog- and people-friendly, designed to foster
motivation and engagement in your pup. I try to incorporate the latest research in animal
behavior and learning theory to ensure effective, ethical training. With an emphasis on
teaching in a way that makes learning enjoyable for your dog, encouraging them to
actively participate in training. Equally important, we help owners develop effective
management strategies to prevent unwanted behaviors and set their dogs up for long-
term success. A dog that enjoys learning is far more likely to develop into a well-
mannered and cooperative companion. To achieve this, positive, reward-based training
methods that are supported by scientific studies on canine cognition and behavior.
What is Positive Reinforcement Training?
I utilize positive reinforcement training, a proven and humane method that reinforces desired behaviors through rewards. By immediately rewarding good behavior with treats, praise, or toys, we encourage your puppy to repeat those behaviors. This approach not only strengthens the bond between you and your dog but also makes training an enjoyable and stress-free experience.
What Training Tools are Used?
This training focuses on identifying what each dog finds most rewarding and using those motivators to encourage cooperation. Rewards may include verbal praise, petting, toys, food, access to preferred spaces (like the couch), or life rewards (such as a walk or extra sniffing time). Additionally, we use humane training tools such as standard buckle collars, front-clip harnesses, leashes, treat pouches, marker signals, and targeting objects (e.g., a target stick or container). I do not use electric shock collars (also known as e-collars or stimulation collars), prong collars, or choke chains. I only use methods that are based on positive reinforcement and trust-building.

About Xenia
Xenia has been an animal lover for as long as they can remember. Growing up in a family that took in all the lost and forgotten animals in the neighborhood, they naturally became a rescuer before they even knew what that meant. Before organized rescues were a thing, their family simply took in every unwanted dog and cat that came their way—like Freeway, a scrappy pup found dodging cars on the 101. Their home was always full of animals—dogs, cats, snakes, birds, and even a tarantula named Chumley. After-school adventures often included trips to the SPCA when it was still at Coyote Point, fueling their lifelong passion for animal welfare, eventually leading to the first volunteer position in their early 20's.
For over a decade, Xenia has been deeply involved in animal rescue, fostering, and training. They got their start at Rocket Dog Rescue, and owe so much to the organization for giving them their first experience in the rescue world 10 years ago. Since then, they’ve worked with multiple rescues, including Dynamic Duo, Grateful Dog, Copper’s Dream, and Tiger’s Heart, fostering and rehabilitating over 100+ dogs.
As an LGBTQ2S+ and Latin person, Xenia believes that supporting underserved communities is deeply connected to their work with animals—because access to compassion, healing, and education should be available to all, whether human or canine. They bring that same energy of love, patience, and understanding to every animal they work with—and they’re all about helping dogs thrive while making sure their people feel supported too.
